JEEP XJ CHEROKEE DAYSTAR

Installed front coil spring spacer. This was an easy task. Jack the Jeep up as high as we could and put stands under the lower control arms as well as the a couple of other places you find convenient. Remove the tires. We did one side at a time. First we unbolted the coil retainer clip and the lower shock mounts. Easy- only three bolts. Then with a jack under the front differential we unbolted the sway bar. The axle then will move down on the jack. Let it down as far as you can go. Then you can unseat the coil and remove it. Then remove the coil isolator and replace the spacer. Then reseat the coil and jack the suspension up so you can rebolt the sway bar. Then make sure the coil is seated correctly and the spacer is installed correctly then rebolt coil retainer clip and the bottom shock. Tips: using a coil spring compresser makes the job easier. Do not remove tie rod ends if you can help it. Use lots of lubricant the night before to loosen rusted parts. Replace worn shocks, bushings, and springs at the same time to minimize install.

Installed REAR Daystar Shackle (greasable version) on our 1988 Jeep Cherokee with blue bushings and greasable bolt. This kit is not recommended for XJs with hitches. Notice how close the shackle is to the hitch plate on the right. We had to cut off the greasable bolt zerk fitting and plug it up to make it fit. We also had to remove the vulcanized rubber bushing in the spring eye to be able to insert the new bushing. This requires removal of the entire spring pack. We then had to machine the bushings down a 1/4 " to get them in. In hindsight I would have gone with the none bushing and non-greasable kits, saved some money and time. When installing the shackles you must remove the lower bolt first then the upper bolt.

USE CAUTION these bolts are probably tight, and will not move without the use of a breaker bar, liquid wrench and a lot of muscle. Be careful not to break them. I used a standard 1/2 inch socket breaker bar and removed the bolts on an 1988 XJ with no problems. GO SLOW!

Use a scissor jack between the frame and the leaf spring to push it down and remove the old shackle. Use the same scissor jack to move the leaf spring up and down to line up the bolt holes. This makes the job a lot easier. This may be the time to install new tougher bolts. USE anti-sieze lubricant generously on each bolt to make it easier the next time you remove the shackles.
